Cookies and browser storage

Cookies are small pieces of data that a website can store in your browser. Websites can also use other storage technologies, including Local Storage. The same questions about permission and control can apply to these technologies even when no cookie is set.

This page distinguishes the administrator login cookies from the analytics configuration described below. It does not assume that all browser storage serves the same purpose or that the absence of an analytics cookie means analytics storage needs no permission.

Administrator login

The website runs on WordPress. Cookies are used to authenticate an administrator who signs in. These relate to access to the administration area, rather than a public form or comment service. The supplied information does not establish their names, expiry periods or any other WordPress cookies that may be present.

Analytics

The installation information describes self-hosted Kantan Analytics being connected to the website. Whether it is currently active has not been confirmed. The described configuration measures visits, pages viewed, sources of visits, countries, devices, clicks, scrolling and conversions. It uses random identifiers in Local Storage rather than analytics cookies. IP addresses are not kept in the analytics statistics.

The description says detailed analytics records are kept for 90 days; aggregates and summaries may be kept longer. It also says external analytics webhooks are switched off. Self-hosted analytics is not the same as having no data processing: measurement can still involve collecting information about how a browser uses the site. Local Storage identifiers may allow activity from the same browser to be associated across visits until the stored data is removed or replaced. The supplied information does not establish the identifiers’ lifespan.

Contabo provides hosting. The server also keeps technical logs, but their retention periods and any arrangements for transferring log data have not been confirmed. Technical logs are separate from the analytics statistics described above.

Permission and exceptions

Storing or accessing an analytics identifier in Local Storage can be subject to rules similar to those for cookies. Whether this particular analytics configuration requires prior consent, or qualifies for an exception, depends on its actual operation and the applicable legal conditions; neither outcome has been established here. If consent is required, analytics storage should not be set or read before you choose to allow it. Merely continuing to browse is not consent.

Administrator authentication cookies serve a different purpose. Cookies needed for a service requested by someone signing in may be treated differently from storage used to measure visitors. That distinction does not automatically make every cookie or storage operation exempt.

Your choices

You can use your browser settings to inspect or delete this site's cookies and Local Storage, or restrict future storage. Blocking authentication cookies may prevent an administrator from staying signed in. Removing a Local Storage identifier can affect how later visits are measured, but it does not by itself erase statistics already recorded.

Where consent is required for analytics storage, you should be able to refuse it and withdraw it as easily as you gave it. You can also ask about the site's storage or object to analytics processing by contacting Oliver Reynolds at motortips.blog@gmail.com. Browser controls and a request about existing data address different things; clearing your browser alone does not send a request to the operator.

Visitor statistics — Kantan Analytics

We use self-hosted Kantan Analytics to understand visits: pages, traffic sources, approximate country, device and browser, clicks, scrolling and paths through the site. The plugin uses browser Local Storage for random visitor and session identifiers, rather than analytics cookies. IP addresses are processed for country lookup and abuse prevention but are not stored in Kantan statistics. Detailed records are retained for 90 days; aggregates, summaries associated with random visitor identifiers and conversion records may be kept longer. Forwarding conversions to external services is disabled. For questions or requests, use the operator contact details on this page.
